Background of the Study
Public sector accountability is a cornerstone of good governance and has significant implications for economic performance. In Nigeria, Auditor General reports have been instrumental in exposing inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement in government agencies over the period from 2000 to 2020 (Onyema, 2023). These reports provide a transparent account of public spending and serve as a catalyst for policy reforms aimed at enhancing accountability and improving service delivery. Effective accountability mechanisms can reduce wasteful expenditure and ensure that public funds are used efficiently to promote economic growth. However, systemic challenges such as weak enforcement mechanisms, political interference, and limited follow-up on audit recommendations have often undermined these efforts (Eze, 2024). This study examines the role of public sector accountability in shaping economic performance in Nigeria, using Auditor General reports as a primary source of evidence. By integrating quantitative data on economic performance with qualitative insights from audit findings, the research seeks to elucidate the relationship between accountability, fiscal discipline, and overall economic health, providing actionable recommendations for policy improvements (Adamu, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of detailed Auditor General reports highlighting inefficiencies in the public sector, Nigeria continues to struggle with economic underperformance. The lack of robust accountability mechanisms and inadequate implementation of audit recommendations have resulted in persistent fiscal mismanagement and corruption (Onyema, 2023). These issues have contributed to inefficiencies in public spending and hindered economic growth (Eze, 2024). This study aims to critically assess the impact of public sector accountability on economic performance by analyzing the findings of Auditor General reports and identifying key areas where accountability measures have fallen short. The goal is to provide recommendations to strengthen accountability frameworks and improve economic outcomes (Adamu, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of public sector accountability on economic performance.
2. To identify shortcomings in the implementation of audit recommendations.
3. To propose reforms to enhance accountability and fiscal discipline.
Research Questions
1. How does public sector accountability influence economic performance in Nigeria?
2. What are the key weaknesses in current accountability mechanisms?
3. What measures can strengthen the implementation of Auditor General recommendations?
Research Hypotheses
1. Improved public sector accountability positively impacts economic performance.
2. Weak enforcement of audit recommendations reduces accountability effectiveness.
3. Strengthening accountability mechanisms leads to better fiscal management.
